- Community Consultant Report –
- Park Enhancement – Jan requested basic wooden picnic tables. It was suggested to begin fundraising before park enhancement has been distributed. Discuss next meeting on possibly purchasing a canopy for shade in the park. Barb can relay cost and supplier information.
- Several areas of concern in the Hampton Village area regarding street traffic controls. Jan will e-mail the link where you can report and traffic issues that need to be addressed.
1) Dates to Remember (Grants & Reports)
- Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant
Applicants should receive notification whether or not they were successful by April 1st.
- Annual Community Association Grants – follow-up reports
It is that time of year again – reporting deadlines for the annual Community Association grants are around the corner! In March, I will provide you with a summary of all reports and documents that are outstanding. For now, at a glance:
- Annual Operating Grant – April 30th
- Annual Programming Grant – April 30th
- Cost-as-a-Barrier Subsidy (if applicable) – April 30th
- Annual Rink Operating Grant – May 15th
Based on my experience, the Cost-as-a-Barrier report can take a while as it often requires collaboration between the Treasurer and Program Coordinator(s) to prepare – consider having a look at this report now. Remember, you can claim cost-as-a-barrier for:
(1) Programs offered for free,
(2) Programs run at a deficit to make them affordable, and
(3) Registration fees waived for individuals/families who could not otherwise afford to take the programs.
- Rink Improvement Grants – applications
Thinking of doing a Rink Makeover? Rink Improvement Grant applications are due April 30th. A maximum of $7,500 is available through this grant program, and Community Associations must contribute a minimum of $750 or 10% of the cost, whichever is greater.
2) Community Association Volunteer Conference – Saturday, March 15th, 2014!
Community Development has arranged for Vince Gowmon, Certified Professional Life Coach, to facilitate this Volunteer Team Building Event on March 15th. The day will be filled with activities designed to empower leaders, engage in community and build up your association’s sense of team. This event will be fun and interactive, leaving you inspired and with practical tools for work and life. Vince Gowmon gives people a playground to discover their authentic self and laugh along the way.
Mark your calendars now for Saturday, March 15th at Station 20 West, 1120 20th Street West. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register either online using the Survey Monkey link provided by email or through your Community Consultant. Register by February 24th and your name will be entered to win an ‘Early Bird’ Prairie Meats BBQ Package for your Association.
Come early & begin your day with Cathy Chicone, Professional Drum Circle Facilitator, for an “In the Moment Music Making” experience from 8:15-8:45 a.m. Using simple patterns and basic rhythms, participants will experience the awesome power of cooperation and teamwork and the importance of good leadership. Great things can be accomplished together when each person simply understands and plays their part. Something unique to kick start your day – ‘Feel the rhythm, Feel the beat’!
3) Volunteer Appreciation Event – “Celebrating our Stars!” (Thursday, April 24th, 2014)
Come and join us to celebrate all of the amazing work Community Association volunteers do to make our city a great place to live. The Volunteer Appreciation event will be held at the Broadway Theatre on Thursday, April 24th from 6:45pm – 9:00 pm. Make sure you mark your calendars and save the date! The Saskatoon Soaps will perform and great theatre treats will be provided. Spouses and significant others are welcome to accompany volunteers.
We hope you will be able to join us for a fun evening filled with laughs, good conversation and Saskatoon’s most famous popcorn!
To help those who would need to take the bus or use childcare in order to attend this event, we will be reimbursing bus fares and up to two hours of child care. Please indicate if this is needed when you register online.

4) New Learn-to-Skate Program – pilot project in Massey Place
The Learn to Skate program is a pilot project being offered by the City’s Community Recreation team It is a free, drop-in, 6-week program to teach kids how to skate. The program will be offered at six different skating rinks in Saskatoon. Close to home, Massey Place will be hosting the pilot project this year! (Archibald McDonald Park is in Massey Place.)
5) New Cross-Country Ski Trail – pilot project in Hampton Village!
What was your New Year’s resolution? Well, if it was to get more exercise, fresh air or sun, then check this out…
The City of Saskatoon has made cross country ski trails in Al Anderson Park, located in Hampton Village. Al Anderson is a long park, with beautiful trees and elevation changes – perfect for a wonderful cross country ski experience!
Cross country ski trails are groomed and maintained by the City of Saskatoon along the east and west banks of the beautiful South Saskatchewan River and in a variety of parks and open spaces throughout Saskatoon. Call Ski Trail Information at 306-975-3300 (Mon-Fri) to find out more about ski locations and daily snow conditions.
The new trail in Hampton Village is a pilot project – we would love to know what you think! Call Jan in Community Development at 306-975-3379 to share feedback. Thank you!
6) Family Day and February Break
Once again there are lots of free and interesting things for children and families to do on Family Day (February 17th) and February break. Stay tuned for a separate e-mail coming your way with information on the City’s programs as well as programs offered by other organizations in the City.
7) Shaping Saskatoon – New Citizen Engagement Tool on the City website
There is a new on-line feature for public engagement on the City website called Shaping Saskatoon. It allows citizens to take part in discussions, online forums, or surveys from a home computer or any mobile device, at a time and place that is most convenient for them.
The online tool will supplement the City’s existing community engagement tools which include public meetings, open houses, surveys, focus groups, and the City’s Facebook, Twitter and Blog pages.
Citizens accessing the website will also have access to useful background documents on the subjects being profiled. For example, current discussion topics are: Smart Meters, the City’s new website, and the Growing Forward! Shaping Saskatoon initiative. It’s an interesting way to become more informed and engaged.
8) Growing Forward! Shaping Saskatoon – join us Tuesday, February 25th!
Growing Forward! is an initiative that will take the community from ‘visioning to action’ on how Saskatoon grows to half a million people. This project will help guide civic investments for the next 30 to 40 years by addressing 3 key elements:
Shaping Growth How do we grow along major corridors?
Shaping Transit How do we move more people?
Shaping Bridges How do we manage infrastructure investments?
Citizens are invited to attend the launch of Growing Forward! Shaping Saskatoon on February 25th with an event at TCU Place. You can either attend the 10 am -1 pm session or the 6 – 9 pm session. (You do not need to attend all 3 hours. There is a ½ presentation at the beginning of each session.)

9) Green Cart Program for 2014
You asked, we listened! The City of Saskatoon’s Green Cart curbside pick-up program for leaves and grass composting has been expanded for 2014. All interested households can download a mail-in subscription form from SaskatoonRecycles.ca and mail it along with a cheque made payable to City of Saskatoon, or pay at City Hall. Registration and payment will also be made simpler by going online beginning March 1st on the SaskatoonRecycles.ca website.
The cost of the Green Cart program is $55/household for the season (May to November), which includes bi-weekly pickup of your unbagged leaves, grass clippings, and non-woody yard vegetation. Simply place your Green Cart at the curb by 7:00 am on your collection day and return it to your yard after pick-up.
Although there is no deadline to register, please subscribe by April 1 to avoid missing the first collection.
The Green Cart program is a convenient and cost-effective way to dispose of your yard waste without sending it to the landfill. When organic waste, such as leaves and grass, ends up in the landfill it produces methane gas when it decomposes, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide. Instead, the yard waste collected through the Green Cart program is brought to the compost depot at the junction of Highway 7 and 11th Street to be converted into valuable compost that is used in City of Saskatoon parks, community and school gardens, and sold to residents.
- 7. Coordinator’s Report
- Soccer Coordinator:
- March 4th is soccer registration – $200.00 float is needed.
- Soccer Coach Certification (Learn to train) will be on March 1st and 2nd. For first time certification it will cost $125.00 and for re-certification it will be $75.00. Hampton Association will cover the expenses by reimbursing the Coach once certification is completed.
- Melanie motions for $7000.00 for the 2014 soccer year. Pam seconded. Motion is passed.
- Melanie found Stephanie to help with Kinder Soccer and she will be working along side Melanie.
- Rink Coordinator:
- Lights were stolen from the rink, look into purchasing more.
- Newsletter is online. Jen would like all info for the Spring newsletter by Mid April.
- Jen will inquire about printing companies, pricing. Minute Man and Pro Print were suggested.
- Jen asked that we count how many newsletters are left over once they have been distributed and let her know the numbers.
- New Business:
- Coop Mailbox – Motion was made by Pam for Jen to check the mailbox once a month. Rob seconded. Motion passed.
- Bowling – March 16th. Registration is due one week prior to the date. First come first serve. Hampton Association will cover the cost. We have six lanes booked. To register e-mail Justine via Facebook or Hampton Webpage.
- Damage to Ron’s truck at the soccer windup will cost $107.66 to fix. Rob motioned to pay the amount and Jen seconded. Passed
